Free QuoteTunisia mostly relies on gas imports to meet its primary energy needs: almost 97% of its electricity generation came from gas in 2016. However, energy policy puts the emphasis on renewable energy. Electricity generation from wind power strongly increased
Exploiting its renewable energy potential will also allow Tunisia to export green electricity, including green hydrogen, contributing to the GHG emission targets of the Maghreb and Europe.
In 2022, only 3% of Tunisia's electricity is generated from renewables, including hydroelectric, solar, and wind energy. While STEG continues to resist private investment in the sector, Parliament's 2015 energy law encourages IPPs in renewable energy technologies.
A comparison of the 2030 and 2050 results clearly shows energy exchange between regions as Tunisia progresses towards a decarbonised economy, reliant on more variable generation and the consumption of electricity in lieu of fossil-fuelled energy (i.e., gas-fuelled end uses and gas-powered electricity generation).
In 2023, the top exports of Tunisia were Insulated Wire ($3.23B), Non-Knit Men's Suits ($1.14B), Refined Petroleum ($930M), Pure Olive Oil ($927M), and Crude Petroleum ($905M). The top destinations were France ($5.19B), Italy ($3.87B), Germany ($3.09B), United States ($933M), and Libya ($847M).
During the last five reported years, the exports of Tunisia have increased by $4.82B from $18.4B in 2018 to $23.2B in 2023. The most recent exports are led by Insulated Wire ($3.32B), Non-Knit Men's Suits ($1.09B), Refined Petroleum ($931M), Crude Petroleum ($929M), and Pure Olive Oil ($897M).
