What Is a Supercapacitor? How Do Supercapacitors Differ When Compared to Other Capacitors?
In some applications though, a hybrid configuration prove to be the most useful. The supercapacitors provide the quick burst of energy for an application, while the batteries handle the long-term energy needs. In some applications, a hybrid configuration may prove to be the most useful.
Here, the super-capacitors are compared with conventional battery (lithium-ion, sodium-ion battery) on various different prospective such as energy density, power density, reliability, life cycle, a high instantaneous current application.
There are four main differences between supercapacitors and batteries: energy density, power density, lifetime, and cost. Energy density refers to the amount of charge a technology can hold. As shown in Figure 3, capacitors have the lowest energy density of commonly used storage devices.
Energy Density: Supercapacitors store much less energy per unit volume or weight compared to conventional batteries. In EVs, energy density translates to mileage per charge. Thus, batteries are more suitable in applications requiring large energy storage.
Supercapacitors are also known as ultracapacitors or double-layer capacitors. The key difference between supercapacitors and regular capacitors is capacitance. That just means that supercapacitors can store a much larger electric field than regular capacitors. In this diagram, you can see another major difference when it comes to supercapacitors.
