In 2030 and 2050, the optimal systems of policy mitigation scenario do not utilize batteries and instead sell excess electricity to the grid. However, in South Korea, the sale of excess electricity to the grid is restricted by the countervailing trade law, which limits the ability of solar EV charging stations to sell surplus power .
Herein, we designed and analyzed a grid-connected highway solar EV charging station for 2022, 2030, and 2050 under two scenarios: Current policy scenario with restricted grid sales and policy mitigation scenario allowing grid sale. Future systems consider changes in EV charging station, grid CO 2 emissions, carbon prices, and renewable costs.
It is clear that solar photovoltaic power does not cover the energy demand from sunset to sunrise (night hours); nevertheless, this is the period of lowest activity at the charging station, matching the time when the charging station requires low or no energy because of the small number of charging sockets being used.
This intermittency can lead to a mismatch between solar energy supply and EV charging demand, particularly during peak usage hours or periods of low irradiance . Consequently, effective strategies such as ESS and smart charging algorithms are required to balance supply–demand dynamics and maintain grid stability.
While valuable insights are provided regarding the feasibility of small-scale yet high-impact solar-powered EV charging infrastructure in developing regions, the lack of storage integration, intelligent energy management strategies, and consideration of user behavior leads to persistent uncertainties about future scalability.
