Free QuoteIt is also called "run-of-the-river" projects. Many consider small-scale hydro a more environmentally-friendly option. Hydro power is a key energy source used for electricity generation in Sri Lanka, which provided almost all the electricity until early 1990s.
Hydropower is the main firm renewable source of generation in the Sri Lankan power system and it is mainly owned by CEB. However, other renewable sources such as mini hydro, wind, solar, dendro, and biomass are also connected to the system, majority of which are owned by the private sector developers.
As stipulated in the Generation Planning code, it is mandatory to adhere to the duly approved government policy issued under section 5 of the Sri Lanka Electricity Act when conducting planning studies.
The results of the Grid Substation Demand Forecast at System Peak and the Long-Term Generation Expansion Plan were then used for the planning of the future transmission network. The methodology and the procedure adopted for transmission planning process are explained in Chapter 2. Table E. 2 : Long Term Generation Expansion Plan 2013-2032
Currently, hydro power stations are operated to supply both peaking and base electricity generation requirements. A substantial number of small hydro power plants which operate under the Standardised Power Purchase Agreement (SPPA) and more are expected to join the fleet during the next few years.
The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority has identified potential resource locations for large scale development in Trincomalee, Ampara, Monaragala, Batticaloa, Hambantota, Kurunegala, Puttalam and Anuradhapura areas to support a longer term large scale development plan.
