With this new project, ENGIE reaches 500 MW of BESS capacity in Europe, either installed, under construction or at an advanced stage of development. On 31 October 2024, Belgian grid operator Elia announced the result of the country's 4th CRM auction and the selection of ENGIE's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Kallo.
Engie described this as “a double success within the CRM framework,” which ensures a future for its site in Belgium. The Vilvoorde BESS project will be launched in two phases, with the commissioning of 100 MW of batteries in September 2025, and a further 100 MW in January 2026.
ENGIE is also generating two other BESS projects in Belgium which already have credentials in place, a 100-MW/400-MWh scheme in Kallo and an 80-MW/320-MWh battery in Drogenbos. The firm targets 10 GW of battery capability globally by 2030. At the end of 2023, it contained 1.3 GW of battery capacity in function and 3.6 GW secured under development.
The park will make a significant contribution to the energy grid by providing stored renewable energy during periods of low solar and wind energy production — thereby reducing Belgium's reliance on gas power plants. Sweco will deliver the design of the civil engineering and electrical engineering works of the battery energy storage system (BESS).
Belgium is one of the most active and mature grid-scale energy storage markets in Europe, with diversified opportunities for monetising battery storage via flexibility markets and a supportive regulatory regime.
