Energy storage systems allow energy consumption to be separated in time from the production of energy, whether it be electrical or thermal energy. The storing of electricity typically occurs in chemical (e.g., lead acid batteries or lithium-ion batteries, to name just two of the best known) or mechanical means (e.g., pumped hydro storage).
It was classified into three types, such as sensible heat, latent heat and thermochemical heat storage system (absorption and adsorption system) (65). Electrostatic and electromagnetic energy storage systems store electrical energy, with no conversion to other forms of energy (i.e., stores as electric field). Capacitors, Supercapacitors and Superconducting magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) belong to this type of energy storage system (32).
The most common chemical energy storage systems include hydrogen, synthetic natural gas, and solar fuel storage. Hydrogen fuel energy is a clean and abundant renewable fuel that is safe to use. The hydrogen energy can be produced from electrolysis or sunlight through photocatalytic water splitting (16,17).
A battery energy storage system (BESS) is an electrochemical storage system that allows electricity to be stored as chemical energy and released when it is needed. Common types include lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries, while newer technologies include solid-state or flow batteries.
