Mechanical storage encompasses systems that store energy power in the forms of kinetic or potential energy such as flywheels, which store rotational energy, and compressed air energy storage systems. Another emerging option within mechanical storage is gravitational energy storage, which is currently under development.
Among the prominent types of mechanical energy storage are Pumped Hydroelectric Energy Storage (PHES), Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), Flywheel Energy Storage (FES), and Gravity Energy Storage (GES).
Electrostatic and electromagnetic energy storage systems store electrical energy, with no conversion to other forms of energy (i.e., stores as electric field). Capacitors, Supercapacitors and Superconducting magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) belong to this type of energy storage system (32).
It was classified into three types, such as sensible heat, latent heat and thermochemical heat storage system (absorption and adsorption system) (65).
