As a consequence, to guarantee a safe and stable energy supply, faster and larger energy availability in the system is needed. This survey paper aims at providing an overview of the role of energy storage systems (ESS) to ensure the energy supply in future energy grids.
A 400 kW, 1.0 kWh supercapacitor energy storage system that aims at improving the power quality in the electrical grid, both in steady state (e.g., harmonic compensation) and during transients (e.g., fault-ride through). A 100 kW, 200 kWh battery energy storage system, that is based on distributed MMC architecture.
Regardless of the time of energy production, the storage provides the energy generated by the PV generator to electrical appliances. Supply and demand can be adjusted to each other. The integrated storage system is designed to cover 100 % of the demand with the energy generated by the PV system during the summer.
Batteries and the BMS are replaced by the “Energy Storage Medium”, to represent any storage technologies including the necessary energy conversion subsystem. The control hierarchy can be further generalized to include other storage systems or devices connected to the grid, illustrated in Figure 3-19.
