A cruising test conducted under specific conditions by BEV using SiC semiconductor inverters demonstrated inverters with SiC power semiconductor reduce power loss less than half of ones with Si semiconductor. As a result, the energy efficiency of BEVs is improved and cruising range is extended.
This reference design is an 800V, 300kW silicon carbide (SiC) based traction inverter developed by Texas Instruments and Wolfspeed®. This design provides a foundation to create a high-performance, high-efficiency traction inverter to help get to market faster. The traction inverter system is a core sub-system of an electric vehicle.

The reference design solves aspects of the inverter that are notoriously difficult and time-consuming. The core components include a 3-phase 1200 V intelligent power module (IPM), already integrated with a gate driver optimized for SiC applications and designed to withstand elevated temperatures (Figure 2).
The authors of [9, 10] presented a 2.5 kW three-phase back-to-back CSI prototype based on normally-on SiC JFETs for motor drives. The researchers of [11, 12] introduced the design of a compact 5 kW CSI based on back-to-back SiC MOSFETs for the non-isolated grid connection of photovoltaic panels.
